my journey. His Grace.

Nicole J. Oshilaja, chief engineer of dreams

The most important thing you'll ever need to know about me is: Music has always been the spiritual axis upon which my life revolves...the spiritual kingdom in which my soul resides....my inevitably passionate Surround Sound Love Affair (SSLX)-- a love so deeply profound and sacred to the sustenance of my being.

I began this journey in the sixth grade when I convinced my mom to take me for a visit to Full Sail University in Florida to scout for Audio Engineering colleges--- the sixth grade! LOL. Even back then, I knew that I was something weird, yet extraordinary and wanted my life to be surrounded by music somehow. I was intrinsically entranced by notes, keys, and rhythms. I was the Black girl who grew up listening to Matchbox Twenty and Shania Twain, instead of Hip-Hop & R&B...watching CMT instead of BET. And when Timbaland and Nelly Furtado released "Say It Right" on MTV's TRL, the airy, yet crisp sound of the drums solidified my lifelong dedication to the love of my life [music]. Since then, I've spent my days yearning to simply be surrounded by it.

It's been a tumultuous journey working towards my SSLX destination-- broken dreams, juvenile incarceration, cancer survivorship, multiple suicide attempts, and others that I won't name. But, the thing that always pushed me through was the music. While my nonlinear professional background is varied across other industries including tech and legal, my core of music still remains as a constant and undying fire that pumps the blood through my veins. And for that, I can only thank God and my Ancestors for gifting me with something so precious that has enabled me the strength, fight, and coping mechanisms necessary to continue on my journey, with His Grace protecting and guiding me every step of the way.

I wouldn't be where I am without the guidance and wisdom of my dream team of mentors, of which I am immensely grateful to have had the honor of being your student of industry. Taking a moment to give flowers & reverse testimonials to the people who have significantly molded my journey.
Billy Johnson
For giving me my 1st intern experience in the music space, which exposed me to SO much, yet prepared me invaluably. And, even picked up live sound skills along the way-- I could never repay you for this experience and hope to always make you proud!
Tony Taylor (Rest in Love)
For teaching me the importance of integrity in the biz, imparting your knowledge and wisdom, and the halo of protection you put around me even when I didn't understand that not all opportunities are good opportunities. I continue to carry you in spirit in everything that I do!
Jan Smith aka "Mama Jan"
For being available to help guide me in my career path at the very beginning and being the embodiment of how to maneuver this space as your authentic self. You're a mama to the stars, but also to the little people too!
Alvin Speights (Rest in Love)
For teaching me how to see colors when I hear sounds LOL, and helping me to hone my skills and train my ears at the end of a long day. To say you were selfless would be an understatement.
Jason Rome
For taking me under your wing to show me how to run sound, investing in my learning, and positioning me with my 1st opportunity to do live sound on a major level. I'm beyond Blessed to have you as a mentor.
Fred Jacobson
For supporting me through my continuing journey of learning sound and being a gentle soul in this not-so-gentle sea of the music industry.
Michael "Roux" Johnson
For being- and introducing me to some of the few individuals that truly do it for the love of music, have good energy and are truly good people in this music space-- the Weirdo Workshop/HH crew. You guys are the select few that I'll always feel safe around.
Tara Griggs-Magee
For giving me an opportunity to learn in a safe environment and providing the role model of how to be a businesswoman in such a male-dominated industry.
Xa Fairley aka Professor X
For always believing in the power of who I am and what I bring to the table even when I doubted myself and tried to avoid the inevitable--coming back home to music.
